During my good ole Higher Secondary days, a girl in my class rejuvenated the age old tradition of replenishing our minds with a good thought on the board. Well, one such thought struck my mind and will always stay imprinted on my heart. It goes thus, "If you are born poor, it‘s not your fault. But if you die poor. Then it‘s totally your fault." It took me some time to actually grasp the real meaning of this phrase. At that time I was young and naïve and the meaning didn‘t strike me, but now I have grown in wisdom and maturity and have finally understood its meaning.
When my friends heard this phrase, they promptly thought of the financial aspect, saying that we need to work hard and earn money and hence we will never remain poor. But I asked them, "What about those manual laborers? Don‘t they work hard?" Well, the essence that I extract from this phrase is that of hard work in all the aspects of life.
All of us are definitely good in one field or the other, but we often fret over things that seem to be our weaknesses. This sort of mentality eventually brings about our downfall. If we fret over this ‗poor‘ aspect of our life, we will never succeed in becoming 'rich'. We need to strive to make these weaknesses our strengths. I don‘t think anyone of us was born reading a book, or playing an instrument, or kicking a ball. All of us are born equals. It is we who decide whether we want to develop our skills or just remain grounded and sepulchral all our life.
No one becomes great overnight or no one develops a plethora of talents in a day. It takes a lot of time, sweat, blood and tears to hone your skills. "I am good for nothing." We need to get this thought out of our minds and say, like the great Mohammed Ali, "I am the best in the world." Do this and just see the wonders in your life. So, don‘t vex yourself for the things that you are poor at, but instead, work hard to make them the highlight of your richness.
Remember, "YOU CAN NEVER DIE POOR."
